Autumn Newsletter - 2016
Crisp new apples, the rustle of aspen leaves at the slightest hint of a breeze, ice in the bird bath and noticeably shorter days are all reassuring signs another seasonal shift is underway. Amid the changes swirling around us all, autumn often serves as a comforting reminder that some things aren’t changing.
We have had a busy few months in our world of helping people and organizations change. There are several new things happening I’d like to share with you in this edition of our newsletter:

Learning takes many forms. More and more technology is playing a significant role in shaping and sharing what and how we learn.

LEADERSHIP LESSONS FROM GEESE
Autumn initiates an annual migration for many species. Canada Geese are one I specifically watch this time of year. Over a decade ago I watched geese do something I’d not seen before or since.
What I witnessed taught me something about leadership and chaos.
CHANGE & PHYSICS – A HELPFUL TIP
At its core, change comes down to basic physics. I am likely on shaky ground here as I did very poorly in high school physics – bad enough to realize further education would need to be in the Arts field rather than the Sciences.
None the less, every organization that successfully changes has 2 clear and powerful forces spelled out so everyone fully understands and is motivated by them.
Those 2 forces are a PUSH and a PULL:
- The PUSH is about a realistic sense of urgency. This consists of honest answers to why change is necessary and the consequences if we don’t change.
- The PULL is about a compelling sense of hope. This consists of as clear a picture as possible about where are we going and how will we recognize it.
Without these 2 forces your organization isn’t going anywhere. With only 1 of these forces the organization may get started on a change journey, but it is highly likely to stall or get distracted along the way.
